What is Fraternity Rush?

Fraternity Rush is the process in which fraternities recruit new members. Rush is conducted informally as a series of open houses and activities that allow you the opportunity to visit each of the fraternities and to gain information about each chapter. Participating in Rush does not bind you to join a fraternity, but it gives you the opportunity to meet new friends and to see what fraternity life has to offer. Fraternity Rush begins in mid August, and lasts four days.

Why Rush Theta Chi?

First, members of Theta Chi seek out individuals they know may be good members for our chapter. Often the first step is just talking someone and getting to know him better. An invitation to join members of Theta Chi for an Event at the Chapter house is often extended when someone has shown the merits of an upstanding individual. Most of the time events and mixers are ways for the members of the fraternity to get to meet and know possible future members or "rush guests."

Towards the end of rush, a rush guest may be extended a "bid" to try out the fraternity and participate in weekly instructional classes to learn more about Theta Chi and what it means to be a member. A bid in no way obligates a person to Theta Chi. Instead, it merely serves as an invitation to learn more about our fraternity and its members. If a bid is accepted, a rush guest then becomes a "pledge" or prospective member, and is given the opportunity to learn more about our organization and it's members.

What is involved in becoming a member?

The first thing that you want to do is to come to our Rush Events. That will give you a chance to meet our current members, and we can get a chance to meet you. We urge all interested members to check out all of the fraternities on campus. At the end of Rush Week, the fraternity will meet to decide which men will make good brothers. We base this decision on attitude (most important!), interest, desire, academic standing and several other factors. If we agree that you will make a good member, we extend a "Bid" to you. A Bid is an invitation to begin the process of initiation. By the end of the week you will either accept or decline the bid. If you accept you are a "pledge" which means that you have made a commitment to join our fraternity, and that you will no longer seek out other Greek houses.

What is a Pledge?

Our pledge program is designed to teach new members what Theta Chi stands for so they may become good brothers and uphold the ideals set forth by our founding fathers. This non-hazing program stresses responsibility, scholarship, chapter operations, leadership skills, national and local history, and alumni relations. There will be meeting twice a week at a time convenient for all involved to attend. At these mandatory meetings pledges will receive lectures from the Marshal and other special guest speakers. The pledges will be assigned material from The Manual of Theta Chi, which they will learn and be tested on at the following meeting. The meetings are designed to teach pledges the ideals of Theta Chi and to assimilate them into our brotherhood.

The Theta Chi pledge education program, in order to serve its purpose, is designed to:

  1. Expect academic responsibility. High academics come first and foremost.
  2. Stress a responsibility to become an active part of the chapter. New members need to become friends with all other members. All active brothers share this responsibility.
  3. Stress a responsibility to share equally and assist in the chapter affairs and activities along with the other members.
  4. Enable the pledge to develop a thorough knowledge of the objectives, history, traditions, and operation of the fraternity.
  5. Enable the pledge to gain self-confidence in himself by the successful accomplishment of constructive assigned to him.
  6. Enable the pledge to improve his personality and strengthen his character through guidance on an individual basis.
  7. Stimulate interest in extra-curricular activities, helping the pledge to become involved in these activities.
  8. Provide education in the art of socialization through instruction in etiquette and participation in social affairs.
  9. Enable the pledge to develop his leadership potential through participation in chapter activities.

Does Theta Chi Haze?

Theta Chi defines hazing as any intentional action taken to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Epsilon Iota Chapter is strongly opposed to any form of hazing. We feel it is pointless and wrong to humiliate those we would like to call friends. Hazing serves no purpose and does not occur in this house. We welcome all pledges of Theta Chi as friends and future brothers.
